Who we are

When Paperback started selling recycled paper in London’s Camden Market in 1983, we were one of the UK’s first eco businesses. Back then recycled paper, if you were able to find it, was rough, grey and a challenge to print on! Despite that, we built up a loyal customer base of consumers and micro businesses wanting to go green.

The company took a big step forward in 1989, when in conjunction with St. Regis Paper Mill, Paperback developed the UK’s first coated recycled printing paper, called SylvanCoat. The product was taken up by pioneering companies such as Body Shop and Wholefoods, and environmentalists like Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth.

In 2001 Paperback became the first paper merchant in the country to be awarded FSC® Chain of Custody for Context White, an uncoated FSC recycled paper. It soon became a popular choice for WWF and other organisations concerned with demonstrating their commitment to sustainability.

In the last twenty years the manufacture, distribution and especially use of paper and board has changed enormously. In this time, Paperback has continued to source the best recycled options to meet the requirements of this changing market.

As well as graphic designers and specialist printers, our customers now include gift stationery and packaging companies, zine and art publishers, restaurants – in fact anyone looking for recycled papers and a supplier that offers unrivalled experience and service.
